Education at the Swanage Railway

GWR loco no. 6695 at Corfe Castle on Sun 5th March 2006 - photograph copyright Andrew P.M. Wright The Swanage Railway is pleased to provide information on Education at the Swanage Railway

The Swanage Railway is an excellent way to help children learn. A trip behind a historic steam train is a lot of fun in itself but it can also be used as an aid to learning as part of an overall, subject-based experience.

You can base your trip around the train or simply use the train as a great way to reach Swanage or Corfe Castle. There is coach parking in Swanage with the drop-off point right next to the station. Coaches can be accommodated free at Norden Park & Ride if booked in advance.

• Science (heat, learning how a steam engine works)
• Nature (wildlife around the railway)
• History (English Civil War, Second World War, Victorian Age)
• Geography (development of local industry)
• Art (drawing and painting)
• Geology (Jurassic Coast)
• English literature (Thomas Hardy)
• General (a full experience during a trip from Norden to Swanage)

Other educational visits in the Purbeck area make Swanage Railway an excellent and engaging place to visit on its own or as part of a longer programme.
