Caledonian Railway Tank, 439 Class ‘419’, will have her furthest ever trip south, headlining our Spring Steam Up between 29th - 31st March 2019 with the World Famous 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’. This fantastic event will combine the best of Scottish and Southern motive power, which will additionally star one of their Sulzer replacements into the 1960s!

Caledonian Tank ‘419’, recently overhauled and resplendent in bright Caledonian blue, will be joining the Swanage Railway for a three week period – booked to see passenger service across the weekend of 16th - 17th March, as well as the 27th – 28th March, before joining the rest of our fleet over the Spring Steam Up. 419 will additionally join our motive power ranks over the running dates of 60103 Flying Scotsman between 22nd and 26th March, operating (if necessary) alongside our previously advertised services.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see McIntosh’s beautiful loco design – echoing that of Drummond with our own M7 – working passenger and freight services in the South! 419 is provided thanks to our friends at the SRPS, regularly based at the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway.

In addition to 419, we are pleased to announce that our very own BR Standard Class 4, 80104, will be transformed for the Spring Steam Up into 80126 – a Scottish Standard shedded at Perth during the 1960s and sporting a traditional Scottish Blue Number and Smokebox plate, as well as cabside renumbering. This gives a unique opportunity to see two locomotives together that certainly have not been possible since the end of Scottish steam.

Together the Spring Steam Up line up will be as follows:-

419 - Facing London (may be turned)

46521 - Facing London
30120 - Facing London
80126 - Facing Swanage
33111 (Saturday and Sunday Only)

60103 Flying Scotsman on static display*

Please note that 34072 257 Squadron is unavailable for this event due to Annual Boiler Re-certification.

*60103 is on static display at Corfe Castle Station in the goods shed siding. (Due to gauging issues Flying Scotsman will be stabled there and not travelling to / from Swanage daily).

‘Scottish, Southern and Sulzer’ will see a range of strengthened passenger trains operating alongside more traditional freight services, as well as our ever-popular Wessex Belle and Dorsetman Dining trains on the Saturday and Sunday respectively. Together with double-heading and some unusual workings his is bound to be a wonderful event – bringing the best of Scotland to the South!

We cannot wait for the excitement that March will bring to the Swanage Railway, so why not come and see a classic Southern branch line with the most famous engine in the world and (arguably) one of the most beautiful!
